[/quote]I grew up in England and things were similar to what you have described except we never had a doggy door.  During the warmer months the back door was open and the dog came inside when it wanted, and when it was inside it went outside to poop. In the cooler months it stayed inside but would wait by the back door to go outside and poop. Never had a crate either and I had never heard of crating a dog until I read comments on this forum.
