I’ll be honest, I DO think of white nationalists when I hear “nationals” now. It’s sad. And a little frightening, too. It makes me uneasy. It’s probably time to think about a new name.
It is amazing how many people lack basic knowledge about so many things, including "nationalism". It's funny that many of these SJWs would probably cheer the concept of nationalism when learning about the Revolutions of 1848, or self-determination after WWI, or the post WWII Independence movement in former colonies or creating a "homeland" for Palestinians. Grow up, people. The racial connotations associated with this now are merely a projection by liberals. MAGA doesn't mean "Make America White" or "let's go back to the 50's." It means, start thinking about the interests of America and Americans when we make policy decisions. It means that we reject unaccountable supranational organizations as a means for decision-making. It means not bowing to the leaders of other countries. Don't like nationalism...
I like nationalism, have read about the revolutions of 1848, etc, and do NOT think that is what MAGA is about. (BTW you might note that self determination after ww2 was accompanied by the founding of the League of Nations - nationalism of that variety is compatible with supra national orgs) (and you are totally misrepresenting how international orgs work, or the extent to which US leaders have used them to advance US policy goals) (also you ignore the abject bowing to Russia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that MAGAs have no problem with) The MAGAs in addition to disliking the UN (and the EU, and NAFTA, and even NATO) and illegal immigration, and much of legal immigration, also like to talk about socalled discrimination against whites, their issues with BLM, about "shithole" (meaning black) cities, etc. They get all upset about attempts to rename streets named after confederates or to move confed statues away from places of honor. They sympathize with the alt right, or minimize the danger from it, using all kinds of dog whistles and eye winking. MAGAism is definitely white nationalism, and the attempt by MAGAs to conflate white nationalism with nationalism in general (as people conflate white pride with specific ethnic group pride - the barrage of "why can't I be proud of my white ancestors" - when everyone knows that forever in the US you could be proud of your Italian, or Irish, or Polish, or, yes, Scots or New England Yankeer ancestors - an attempt to disguise a white racial agenda) are a big part of what has brought nationalism into disrepute among the young. Most Magas would have been with the forces of reaction in 1848 - which won by demonizing the liberals, arousing fear of socialism and secularism, etc. Do not besmirch the names of Lamartine, Kossuth, Garibaldi, etc by associating them with your reactionary, illiberal movement.
