Idk. I'm not a Trump fan. It's definitely tactless, but isn't it kind of true? I think we should all get way more outraged about endless war than we do about which platitudes are ok to use with respect to those dying in the endless wars.
There are a lot of things that are true that you wouldn't say to a widow burying her husband.
Seems fairly respectful to me. The idea is that the guy is so brave and patriotic that he knowingly accepted the risk to himself in order to serve his country.
Just S.T.O.P. There was nothing respectful about it. It is gross. Having lost loved ones tragically I cannot imagine having to listen to a completely self-absorbed moron. He has no redeeming qualities. He is an awful person who really doesn't give a rats a** about anyone but himself. La David Johnson died for his country and Trump by his very words sounded like it was no big deal. Can you imagine if Reagan had said--well, they knew what they signed up for when the Challenger exploded killing everyone aboard? Can you imagine if after 9-11 Bush said of the Fireman and Policeman who died trying to rescue people from the Twin Towers--they knew what they signed up for? Me neither. He is truly awful.
