It is only scratchy for a bit when it is short, but then as it gets longer it gets softer and it is actually less irritating on your face and body than stubble if he hasn't shaved for a few hours. I've been with all stages of a beard/non-beard and full beards, although I think they can be gross if they aren't clean and kept up nicely, are not uncomfortable on your face or anywhere else on your body.
