That implies (connotation, not necessarily denotation) a certain level of violent effect, or at least a certain level of transfer of energy. I wouldn't say he was hit by the car. He might well have been brushed by it with a very light contact -- I don't know for sure -- but to say he was hit by it would be similar to saying I'm hitting my head every time I brush my hair.
