I've always hated this flag, and I'm glad there's some real movement to take it down from government buildings. But I feel it's just a token measure that makes people feel good for the moment, and nobody cares to address the true, systemic racism that pervades every aspect of our culture. A flag is easy. Racism, not so much.
As you have written that...it was absolutely true on a large scale in 1933, today it is nonsense.
I see it happen daily. I've done it myself, sadly. When the Dantes get an interview as often as the Davids, with identical resumes, then I'll think we've made some progress.
Education and the criminal justice system. Those are the two areas that have SERIOUS systemic racism wrinkles that need to be ironed out.
And they both significantly impact life-long employment and the ability to create wealth.
Still, personal choices remain and will always remain the most significant impact on everyone's life.
Exactly! Because if a black dude makes the personal choice to put on a hoodie before walking to CVS to pick up his prescription one night and then makes the personal choice to stand outside and finish smoking his cigarette before going in it could significantly impact his life. Some cops driving past may see him and automatically suspect he's up to no good and subsequently they may pull up to him and ask what he's doing there and request he provide some identification and tell him to move along and he may be offended and question their reason for harassing him or he may ignore their instructions and go inside the store anyway because he needs his prescription and BAM!! Possibility of either a dead black dude or a black dude under arrest all because of his personal choice to wear that hoodie and smoke that cigarette.
