I've always hated this flag, and I'm glad there's some real movement to take it down from government buildings. But I feel it's just a token measure that makes people feel good for the moment, and nobody cares to address the true, systemic racism that pervades every aspect of our culture. A flag is easy. Racism, not so much.
As you have written that...it was absolutely true on a large scale in 1933, today it is nonsense.
I see it happen daily. I've done it myself, sadly. When the Dantes get an interview as often as the Davids, with identical resumes, then I'll think we've made some progress.
What you illustrated, a person reacting to such a name could certainly be guilty of a racial assumption therefore an example of racial exclusion and even racism, but it does not rise up to meet the standards of systemic racism. Racism exists...no doubt about it...when words like systemic, pervades, every aspect...are used one has to be able to support that and it is a BIG, and I believe impossible, task to do so. Let's take one aspect of what would be included in a definition of systemic racism...politics. In the 113th Congress we have 43 members of the House, one in the Senate and one in the White House who are black. In the 91st Congress there were a total of 10. Interestingly enough I recently saw where a black woman was elected as mayor of a major US city in the south. The black population there is about the average for the nation. Talk about racism in realistic terms. It is more of a part of our life today than I would have thought it would be when I saw LBJ sign the bill on tv...it was systemic then...but doesn't meet the criteria today.
