Why are folks shocked when he fights for his members? That is kind of his job.
Exactly.
I agree that he should be encouraged to advocate his opinions. However, I think it's hypocritical to post his commentary and discourage a discussion. The coffee offer is also so passive aggressive. Translation: You can disagree with my public comments, but not in public!
I didn't read it as people can't disagree with him, just he said upfront he isn't going to respond and get into a back and forth on social media. That's fair.
He won't respond to you but he'll ask for your $$.
I support his willingness to be a vocal advocate, but super turned off for the $$ requests.
What money requests? His advocating for teacher pay?
He's set up some donorschoose type fundraisers to buy things for his classroom. First one was an immediate success....therefore we all should have expected more to follow....
Tons of teachers do that. It’s ridiculous they need to spend their own money for some classroom supplies.
Agree. But they don't all advertise their donors choose pleas on AEM and then keep coming back for subsequent ones.
so you begrudge him advertising where it's effective and has a big reach? and where it's allowed? if you don't want to contribute, don't. where is he supposed to post that would be more acceptable to you? i bet you are also a person who opposes higher taxes so you know teachers wouldn't have to do that.
I would prefer it not be one teacher posting one fundraising ask at a time and seeing how far he gets, essentially making repeated requests to the same audience; that other teachers do the same, or limit the requests one teacher can make, or better yet, have a separate website where all teachers can post their wish lists and make an occasional post on AEM to please look at that other site and consider helping out. If AEM becomes inundated with fundraising requests, it (1) detracts from AEM being an issues-discussion and question-posing-for-information exchange and (2) becomes very off-putting, especially for those of us who are not able to contribute to everything all the time.
It stopped being this a long time ago. It’s an echo chamber for the 5 posters who still post there.
