I'm going to continue wearing a mask indoors for the foreseeable future until a vaccine is developed to cover current variants. It is not "political" at all, I'm wearing as high a quality mask as I can afford to protect my health. I don't care what anyone else does at this point.
An omicron-specific vaccine has been developed already both by Pfizer and Moderna. It's undergoing clinical trials now. Very small animal studies (in mice and primates) suggest it triggers the same immune response as the current vaccines-- high levels of antibodies targeted at the original spike protein. It sounds like you and I are on the same page about making choices based upon our own health and the circulating variants, which sounds sensible. But your condition for mask removal is worth revision, since it has already been met. I stopped wearing a mask after recovering from omicron, which was for me a very mild infection. The reason was twofold: I believe I have a good level of immunity AND, even if I don't, omicron was such a non-event that the very brief symptoms it caused were less onerous than wearing a mask in public. I will resume masking if a more virulent variant emerges that is able to evade all existing immunity.
