DP, the other thing that sticks out is that she was charged with second-degree and not manslaughter. If she were defending herself and Christine from Joe’s, stabbing/threatening/etc., it would likely have been manslaughter. Second degree indicates, although not premeditated, time to think about the actions.   [/quote]

Thinking they overcharged to try to get her cooperation re: Brendan Banfield so they have the strongest case possible despite his lack of cooperation. If she provides it, pretty certain it will be plead down. And excellent point, suggests not in the heat of the moment action.
