Objectively Keith Urban is not that successful though I wouldn’t call him unsuccessful. He sold in his whole career about 17 million albums globally - while that’s a lot of albums, when you look at other artists who were selling albums at a time when people were actually buying albums, that’s not a lot. For reference, if you’re at all up on the Bad Bunny Super Bowl thread happening now, Bad Bunny started seven years ago and has sold over 100 million albums. I’m not bashing Keith Urban because hey, I’ve sold zero albums so good on him, but he’s been around a long time and to only have that number of album sales means he’s a moderate success.
Keith is just a country music artist, so there’s a limited pool of album buyers. It’s not an apples to apples comparison with Bad Bunny’s album sales since he’s a crossover artist who appeals to pop, rock, rap fans in both Spanish speaking, English speaking, and other countries. Country artists aren’t ever as big as crossover artists—which is why Taylor Swift branched out to pop music.
Honestly, not trying to be rude, but you just have no idea what you are talking about. Country music is a huge genre and a big portion of the country buys it. Zach Bryan, a young guy who has really just started has already sold 30 million albums. Carrie Underwood, a woman in country which has an even higher uphill climb, has sold 85 million albums. country albums are some of the best selling. For KU to be in this genre and to be in it so long it only hit 17 million he simply just not that successful.
Honestly, I am a country music fan. Carrie Underwood is a crossover artist with pop hits. Zach Bryan is an anomaly. A lot of his songs sound like the alternative music I listened to in college, and unsurprisingly he found fame with college and then high school students. He rode the college campus/college bar wave starting in southern areas before playing stadiums across the country. Again: anomaly. Urban has never hit that level. Regardless, Bad Bunny has a much wider global audience that transcends language.
