HPS presents like a million other things and rapidly progresses to shock, organ failure, and death. It’s actually quite rare, less than 900 known cases since monitoring began in 1993. Most people aren’t thinking about Hanta virus. Betsy felt well enough to be running errands and within 12 hours she’d fallen over dead.

[i] Early symptoms, such as fever, dry cough, body aches, headaches, diarrhea and abdominal pain, are similar to many other viral illnesses. This may prevent an HPS diagnosis before the illness progresses.
