A 65 yr old with relentless fatigue, breathing trouble, fever, (HV symptoms) etc...and not a call to, at the very least, to the doctor?

That's actually very believable. I'm a caregiver (posted earlier last week) and 57. It takes a LOT to get me to go see a doctor. By the time I finally go, I should be admitted to the hospital, basically.

That's not very smart if someone is dependent on you ...

Dang I could see something like this happening to my dad, and NO, I’m not a terrible daughter. His wife is 20 years younger than him and does all his care - at her insistence. They live 1,000 miles away from me. He’s in physical decline (Parkinsons). I call him every few days. If he didn’t pick up, it would still take me a few days to get worried, because he has a wife/caregiver. If I didn’t hear from him in, say, 3 days, then I’d reach out to her. Probably give her 24 hours to respond and if I didn’t hear back then, I’d ask for a welfare check. So easily could be a week.

I don’t feel like a terrible daughter. I feel like I’m doing the best I can with a declining dad whose wife sort of isolates him, and doesn’t encourage any relationship between him and me.

Not defending his daughters, but also not seeing them as the villains.

It happens all the time in the South West. Totally clean house, and you can't detect there are rodents in your walls and ceiling. They poop and pee and you breathe in Hanta.

There were only 7 cases in New Mexico in 2024. So not “all the time,” and people typically aren’t exposed just by sitting in the house.

+1

The chance of the average person contracting hantavirus is something like .0071%, I read.

Clearly Gene’s kids did not care about him or have a human compassion for the issues that elderly people or immediate caregivers suffer through. I believe they will regret their lack of concern or interest in their father. I’m sure they will reap large inheritances but they have lost integrity and a moral compass in the eyes of his fans and followers of this story. I do not judge the children but just pass along to others, rise above lack of compassion for others no matter what you deal with in life as regrets weigh more on people than just doing what’s right.

What if they did not want his children to get involved? What if his children were made to feel like they were after their Dad's money or fame?

Hantavirus symptoms can onset very fast, and turn deadly suddenly. She might not have had any of these symptoms until the very end. I sounds like well enough earlier that day to drive, run errands, etc. , so it wasn’t like she had significant fatigue or breathing trouble even earlier that day.

Her decline was super rapid. The articles make it sound like she was out and about at the store and pet food place at 5:15 pm and was fine to drive home to her house after that, and then may have taken a sudden turn for the worse and died later that night.

Sometimes it happens over days but in some cases, hantavirus symptoms can show up very suddenly and kill you in hours. It’s also very rare (7 cases in New Mexico last year) and often misdiagnosed.

Why does the age of the parent’s spouse factor in with how often someone checks in with their own parent?

How dare you be so obnoxious as to force your relationship with your elderly parent on everyone else. You love to have a reason to trash other people.

You are making excuses by blaming others.

Did Gene not notice Betsy on the bathroom floor?
Do you not notice things like that with Alzeihmers? Or maybe he noticed, but bc of his lack of mental logic didn't do anything? Or his attempt to "help" was going to walk to a neighbor's house (He was found dead in the mudroom).

HPS presents like a million other things and rapidly progresses to shock, organ failure, and death. It’s actually quite rare, less than 900 known cases since monitoring began in 1993. Most people aren’t thinking about Hanta virus. Betsy felt well enough to be running errands and within 12 hours she’d fallen over dead.

Early symptoms, such as fever, dry cough, body aches, headaches, diarrhea and abdominal pain, are similar to many other viral illnesses. This may prevent an HPS diagnosis before the illness progresses.

If the initial symptoms are not connected to hantavirus exposure and are left untreated, late symptoms will onset rapidly. These symptoms include cough and shortness of breath, which are the result of leaky blood vessels and lead to collection of fluid in the lungs, bleeding and failure of the heart to pump. The combination of these changes can lead to shock, failure of several organs and even death.

Not necessarily. 65 is a funny age. You're getting older, you realize you're getting older, but you don't feel any different than when in your 40s or 50s. You don't feel older. If you're healthy and you've led a healthy life, 65 is mostly an extension of a healthy middle age.

Going to the doctor's is a hassle especially if you're worried about your frail DH. Pure speculation, but if she thought she had the flu, she may have been powering through the symptoms. She had no idea it was serious.

The breathing trouble? That should have been a big red flag. Perhaps she didn't have breathing problems until the very end, when she was about to collapse?
