Pains me to say it but as Russia doesn’t really back down despite great losses: economic, war, and others - I am afraid the world will run out of resources to support Ukraine at the level needed to win in a sense that Ukrainians understand it. They will soon be pressured into some sort of negotiations or accepting that they might lose some while winning a lot: world sympathy and support. I know it doesn’t sound very patriotic and I will probably be accused of being a Russian troll but I just don’t see the needle moving in the next few years. Similar to covid there will be some sort of easing up and giving in.
Russia backed down from Afghanistan after the Russian populace learned of the full extent of how many Russian troops had been lost. They've already lost far more in 1 year in Ukraine than they did in 20 years in Afghanistan but they are lying about it to their people and are telling them a false number that's significantly lower. I think once the people actually learn how poorly it's going for Russia the tone may change.
The USSR didn’t try to occupy any of Afghanistan territory so it was easier to pull out The Soviet leader at the time was very different than the Russian one now They might stop trying to take more land and even give some back but they will fight tooth and nail for Crimea and maybe Donbas
