The culture of high level, competitive soccer is to celebrate goals. I'm surprised you have a child who plays soccer and you're not aware of this. Have you never watched a match? It's as much a part of the culture as faking injury is.
Really - over the top celebrations of blowout goals is part of soccer culture? Not that I have seen - certainly not on my son's team. Our parents and coach would not tolerate our kids behaving that way. Megan Rapinoe's and a few of Alex Morgan's goal celebrations were ridiculous for almost any goal let alone for late goals that put a team up 9-0 or more. They need to grow up - their behavior is embarrassing. These are World Cup and Gold Medal winners - act like you have been there before. Or keep playing the sexism card. Keep apologizing for them if you want. I am looking for a new team to root for in the tournament.
Which of Morgan's celebrations was over the top? The one where she tied the most goals scored by an individual in a World Cup game? That's kind of a big deal. Rapinoe's was one I could see people muttering about. But even with that, I've seen plenty of other celebrations similar, although the ones I'm thinking of are men. And people aren't just muttering about Rapinoe, they're criticizing the entire team for excessive celebration. And yes, Morgan and Rapinoe have been there/done that so generally speaking I am less forgiving of Rapinoe celebrations than Pugh celebrations. But again, goal scorers celebrate. Effusively. And not only in "important" or "well-matched" games. Just like men flop in soccer like it's going out of style.
