Because Iran then would close the SOH leading to pandemonium. That economic and political pain would be much worse than working out an agreement. Leading up to the MOU Trump was desperate for a deal and was too weak to push back to Iran's demands that included reparations.[/quote]

You are correct that Iran could threaten again. In that scenario, other countries with better ties to Iran (China, Russia?) could tell them to cool it.

I don’t think we should gain anything. We lost and it was stupid on Trump’s part to even pull us out of Obama’s deal let alone attack Iran, but I also don’t see why we would pay $300b if we just left. [/quote]

You have to negotiate to leave.
US have military bases and business interests all around the Middle East.
You can’t just blow up things and experiment with your new weapon system for few months and say I am done and am going home.
