I've been checking the news every day for updates, but I can understand why they're not coming. Police have announced specifically that he'll be tried as a juvenile, which is a big statement given that he's 17, this is Virginia, and the crime is pretty heinous. If they're not going to make a run at trying him as an adult, it's because they know he has some specific capacity issues that would preventing them from showing he had full mental capacity to appreciate what he was doing. As a minor being tried as a juvenile, media outlets will generally have a policy against disclosing his identity or other readily identifying information without his parents' consent. Police will also release less information about crimes when juveniles are involved for a variety of reasons.

I also suspect that part of the reason information isn't coming out as gossip is that the teens probably attended a very small school for children with mental/emotional difficulties, which means they simply didn't have as wide a social as kids in public or a mainstream private would, and parents who knew them through the school are less inclined to talk lest it bring scrutiny upon their own children for attending the same school.[/quote]

pp, i think you're correct. I will note that the NBC story/video that a link was posted to earlier in this thread had the reporter say the name of the community that his family lived in and then showed the reporter knocking on the door to the house with the street number in plain view on the video. It's not a big community, and so it's pretty easy to confirm the names of the parents and see that the speculation as to his name on other websites is correct. I also suspect that the police don't think he is going to make it, or at the very least will no longer have the mental capacity to be tried as a result of his presumably self inflicted wounds. It's a really sad situation.[/quote]
