They get it, but they also know that if they don’t go harder on abortion, the evangelicals/Catholics/fundamentalists won’t vote for them. The Baby Boomer generation, which has been reliably Republican for decades (yes, I know, “not all boomers;” overall they’re still a Republican voting block) is beginning to shrink and covid hastened that. If they lose the religious voters, the GOP will be done for-done for.
