Let's be honest - dispense with the talk about "family freindly neighborhoods" "more police resources" blah blah. The truth of the matter is that, although this was violence between folks from other neighborhoods, the upper SES White folks in Woodley Park are disturbed that they got a taste of something that normally occurs in other places in the District.
Also, remember that this incident and other violence in recent years took place at or outside the National Zoo, part of the Smithsonian. It is not the DC Zoo (arguably that moniker should grace the District Building. ) :) Easter Monday may be a local tradition for some, but the Zoo belongs to (and is paid for by) all of the American people and is one of the region's biggest tourist attractions. All visitors, whether from Washington, the rest of the country or elsewhere, have the right to expect a safe atmosphere for themselves and their families and friends. It is not us to any of us to minimize concerns over safety at the Zoo and the surrounding area because there is violence in other parts of the city. A family friendly zoo is not just right, it's economically smart. Last year visitors pumped $6.7 billion into the city's economy, which fuels a lot of jobs. Many of those visitors went to the Zoo. Let's address the violence before it becomes a reason for them to stay away.
