Does anyone on dcum know someone personally impacted by all of this crazy book banning?
Do you mean someone who wrote the banned books? Someone who enjoys one of the banned books? Someone who lives in the banned book area but hasn’t expressed interest in that book? Someone who lives in a banned book area but now can’t access one of the banned books? Someone who lives in an area where a library closed down because the book banners cut off funding or otherwise drove librarians away? I don’t think this is what you mean but I’ll say yes. Not dramatically affected, but affected. My kids have read (and I think own) some of the books that are popular to ban. My son is trans, and when people try to ban books because of gender issues, it affects him negatively, even if he’s not in an area where those books are hard to access. I can see how it’s distressing to know that there are groups of people who don’t want their kids to even read about or discuss that you exist just because of how you express your gender. We’re not into censoring reading materials, and we encourage exposure to different points of view, so it’s especially shocking to them that parents are not just banning books in their own homes but trying to ban them in schools and public libraries.
