I have not read the entire thread so this may have been asked. It appears that the strength of the Russian military has been greatly exaggerated. I dare say that most of the world believed that Russian military might was close to, or same, as the US. Ukraine recovering territory from Russian troops basically waving a white flag. How could Putin have made such a disastrous decision? I
1. Putin has his own weird imperialist world view that (erroneously) sees Ukraine as historically belonging to Russia. 2. Putin wanted/needed the public support for his regime that a successful military venture would provide, especially after his inadequate response to Covid. 3. Putin is germaphobic and has been insanely isolated during/since Covid, so he's been alone to ruminate and obsess about 1 and 2 4. The Orthodox Church is led by a right wing nationalist who is always in Putin's ear, further stoking 1 and 2. 5. Putin is surrounded by yes men who told him Ukraine would welcome its "liberators." 6. Russia has spent a ton of money in the last 20 years on its military, leading Putin to believe that he had a military capable of defeating Ukraine. 7. Russian corruption in the military is so pervasive that money and supplies have been siphoned off at every level for years, leaving it poorly equipped and poorly trained. 8. Putin believed that the West wouldn't give any meaningful help to Ukraine, since no one stopped him from a string of previous military actions in both Ukraine and elsewhere. 9. Putin thinks the West is feckless and that modern, democratic values make countries weak, so he fundamentally does not understand what Ukraine and the West feel is at stake. There's probably more, but that's what I can think of off the top of my head.
