It's not an illusion when top-of-the-roster players from ECNL teams like Arlington, VDA and Loudoun are moving to MLS Next teams like SYC and Achilles.  The MLS Next teams to which they moved would handily beat the teams they left.  So that's reality.  Not just including "Elite" in your league name, which is increasingly ironic on the boys side.

Did not say SYC. Top Arlington roster talent went to Achilles. SYC got VDA’s top kids and one of the better Arlington players. Get your facts straight before you sound like an idiot. I am sure you will still be a smug ass, but you won’t sound as dumb as you are. [/quote]

Top Arlington roster talent - about a dozen kids - went to professional academies, mostly DCU, some other MLS clubs, and one to Serie A.  I'm aware of one kid who moved to SYC because he couldn't start at Arlington and was promised a starting role at SYC.  There may be one or two others - but you clearly have no idea what you're talking about - and the picture you are painitng is upside down.[/quote]

Upside down?  You mean Arlington and Loudoun are getting players from MLS Next teams?  Tell us all about it. You don’t know what is happening at the younger ages where kids do not feel locked in. All the switching is going in one direction, and only top talent is getting spots to come over. [/quote]

A couple of kids switching teams at U12 and U13 "because MLS Next" doesn't mean a thing.  What counts is how the kids are coached and develop thereafter.  The new teams will either prove they can develop talent or they won't.  That will be best measured by the number of kids that get spots at pro academies.  Arlington and Richmond have proven they can do it sending kids year after year after year.

If the new clubs can do the same, then they too will become top clubs.  If they can't, they won't.  VDA was an example of a DA club which just never really managed to make that leap.  They had full DA participation when none of the other clubs in this area did, but - with one or two exceptions which proved the rule - they couldn't/didn't develop kids, so they were never really anything other than an also-ran in the DA.  There were other DA clubs in Pennsylvania which had much the same issue.  Being in MLS Next isn't a guarantee of anything, any more than being in DA was before.

I agree. But things change and nobody - not Arlington or Richmond - has proven they can do anything forever. It always starts with the talent coming through the door. The coaching staffs then need to perform, as you explain. Being in MLS Next isn’t a guarantee. Nor is being at any club, whether Arlington, Bethesda or Richmond. And just because some players on some teams at some clubs have done things in the past doesn’t mean anybody at those clubs will continue to do so in the future.  [/quote]

Of course no-one does anything forever.  But I disagree that it starts with the talent.  It starts with the coaches for two reasons
(1)  A tiny handful of kids aside, the talent at U12/U13 is not that different between all the teams.  Development is what separates the top clubs from the rest.
(2)  The better coaches are able to better spot talent, better develop it, and better attract it.

And local history tends to back this up.  Clubs ascend and fall based on coaching staff changes more than any other factor.

So my guess is that Arlington and Richmond will continue to do what they have been doing as long as they keep solid coaching staffs together.  And SYC/Alexandria/Achilles now have a shot to show that they can build a strong program too.  Whether they can or not will depend on the coaching staffs (either the current ones or upgraded depending on their approach).  The league helps of course - but it is a secondary factor.[/quote]
