One of my kids had a basement room in her first year, and I was worried it would be dark and dingy. It was lovely. It didn't have A/C, but it remained cool on warm days. It was slightly darker than the rooms upstairs, but she was mostly there at night when it was dark anyway, so it wasn't a problem. DC and her roommate decorated in light pastels with BRIGHT posters.
