Pitt used to be a go to school and Michigan was high for a few years.  Now UMD, UIUC, and Purdue.  There seems to be a word of mouth effect or perhaps a concerted recruiting effort from certain schools.

VT was 7 in 2022 and 23 in 2023.  It has always surprised me as well that so few go to VT.  Most years it is lower than W&M, which is 1/5th the size and does not have engineering.  [/quote]

Not surprised in the least that VT is not popular . The top Stem talent at TJ as well as other magnets and top privates in Virginia go to ivies with Engineering , or Duke or Hopkins, or Georgia Tech, Michigan. My DC is at an ivy and met NOVA kids at admitted days. They don’t want VT. It does not place nearly as well into grad school or med school(for BMEs ), nor into top tech industry leadership roles.
