Beyoncé must be one of the most overrated entertainers of all time. She doesn’t completely suck, but she’s certainly nothing special.
This. She does not have the voice of a Mary J Blige, not in the same universe. But she's good at using stripper poles in her shows so there's that I suppose.
Huh? I'm a MJB super fan. I'd never put her in the category of a powerful voice. Now if you would have said Adele, I would have given you that. Little secret, not all the best entertainers of all time will have the best voices of all time and not all best voices of all time will be the best entertainers. Michael Jackson and Prince are GOAT like figures (and great singers) but not the best voices in their genre. Taylor Swift is not even top 5 voices of her peers but she's a GOAT in her genre/category. Same with Usher. You can't deny Beyonce is the same. Drake is far from the best 20 rappers, but he's still a star nonetheless. Why the Beyonce hate?
Not loving someone and thinking they’re overrated is not the same as hating them. JFC. I don’t think anyone hates Beyonce but some of us find her music, dancing, and even looks “blah” at best. And we simply don’t understand this societal Beyonce worship.
Yes, hate is not the word. She is annoying like a mosquito. Her talent is completely overrated. Her vocal style is annoying. That would be fine except that she and her husband are so over the top in their arrogance and you can't escape them. Maybe they don't get all the awards because they don't deserve all the awards and they should just shut up about it.
Same jay zs rant at the Grammies was a disappointing display of entitlement and lack of class. Beyoncé has plenty of well deserved Grammies.
AOTY is treated like a songwriters award and that’s why Beyonce hasn’t won. Beyonce is less songwriter and more album curator. She conceptualizes the album but brings in others and samples songs to create it. The academy could create a second AOTY to award concept and achievements in production. She’d be a shoo-in for that.
DP. I get what you're saying. Doesn't it feel like Beyonce isn't the one conceptualizing and producing her albums, though? As others have said, her emotion isn't layered across her body of work--or even across an entire album. It feels overproduced. Her shows look overproduced. Her videos, her image, feels like she is performing someone else's vision. Maybe it's Jay Z's, but it seems more theatrical than one person's. There has to be a group (including Beyonce, sure) that comes up with most of it. Honestly, *other than* the work that is strategically released and curated, does anyone have a sense of Beyonce, the woman? Her vision of her career? I won't include her family because they've chosen to be exceptuobally private about their family and I respect the heck out of that choice.
No single artist does all that and all these huge tours are overproduced. NO one can run their mini-corporation/brand, dance, sing, write all the songs, make the costumes, choreography and the scenes for a huge tour. It takes TONS of people. Think of all the bonuses Taylor gave to her staff (not just the truck drivers) as an example. It takes LOT of people to make these massive artists. They all look overproduced to me. I mean you are going to a music version of Cirque Du Soleil at this point. Good for Beyoncé for keeping her work life and social life separate!
I took “overproduced” as a reference to the album and its numerous writers and producers. No one expects musical artists to do all the non-musical things like tour logistics, choreo, and costumes. I’m sure artists have a vision but they’ll need experts in those fields to carry it out. We don’t truly know Beyoncé’s involvement in her albums because she doesn’t do press or promote any of her work. Artists need to campaign for Grammys like actors campaign for Oscars. Taylor Swift didn’t promote Reputation and it received zero nominations despite being one of her better albums. Beyonce has actually done better than Taylor with the silent approach but it’s not surprising that Beyonce hasn’t won the top prize.
