One of my former students was very out of control. She had tried to cut other students with scissors, hit/punch/kick whatever adult tried to stop her from eloping or hurting other people, etc. Her mother refused mental health services because she was "fine at home." Long story short, there isn't a lot that can be done without parental consent. I felt so bad for this child who was struggling so much. She transferred and I still wonder how she is. We need a lot more mental health counseling and sometimes students just need to be removed for everyone's safety even if the parent doesn't agree.
his +1 I had a student with a lot of emotional and volatile behaviors. One day he just took off me and the principal called the police and were standing outside trying to find said student and the principal said to me this kid could easily turn into a school shooter. That student threw a desk at me the following week-he was in a blind rage didn't even know where he was throwing it. I was lucky to have the principal I did-he supported me every step of the way through a long process to get the child to an ED center. I'm grateful he was the principal because he made sure students and staff were safe and the process moved a long for us. With the wrong principal this could have been a very different situation. This student is an adult now and is in prison. The mom always said he was "fine" he tried to kill mom when he was in high school. I need to say teachers go through a lot more than the community realizes-we are tired and nervous about a lot of things we see and experience.
