Actuslly, I think it's the reverse.   The other candidate,  Dr Logan, realized she wasn't getting the job, so she withdrew to make it look like she wasn't the loser in the competition.

We know that the NAACP wrote their letter trying to stop the board from picking Dr Reid.  Dr Logsn must have know that Dr Reid was the chosen candidate.  That's why she withdrew....to save face for her Omaha constituents.[/quote]
