Does anyone know what the actual holdup is in getting shot clocks in VHSL games, and who we'd need to lobby to make the change? It would be a lot more fun.
There are likely several things involved with VHSL schools not moving to shot clocks yet, but I would imagine that in the next few years it happens. 1. Execution prohibitive - Many schools can barley get volunteers to run the table/scoreboard, and trying to have someone pay close enough attention to the game and ref signals to reset the shot clock would be an issue. However, the refs can manually keep the shot clock, but expecting players to be counting it down in their heads? 2. You need to purchase Shot clocks for both ends of the field, and getting every program under VHSL to do that would be an issue. 3. Overall skill set and Field IQ across VHSL (not Robinson & Madison) doesn't warrant the push to add the shot clock metric now. Would it speed at the game? Yes. Would players adapt and figure out the shot clock? Yes. The argument that it will prepare players for the college game is not relevant. While true, that accounts for about 2% of HS players in Virginia. I do hope VHSL adds the shot clock in the future across VHSL.
