We’re 20 pages into this. For the love of God, will someone explain to me why the following words that Jimmy Kimmel uttered got him fired? He did not disparage Charlie Kirk or “celebrate” his death. His broader point is that the Trump administration and MAGA are using Kirk’s killing to score political points. That is a widely held belief on the left and has been voiced by many others in TV, social media, etc. Why force him to apologize to the Kirk family and to make a donation to Turning Point when Kimmel didnt say anything bad about Kirk himself? Kimmel said, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it.” He suggested the suspect, Tyler Robinson, was aligned with the MAGA movement and criticized Trump supporters for denying this to exploit the tragedy politically. Kimmel also mocked JD Vance’s claims blaming the left and called Trump’s emotional response insincere.
In the early 2000s, experts on extremism identified a newly developing type of hate speech they labeled as “political dog whistles”. These dog whistles are meant to activate the unconscious prejudice and hatred within the intended audience without the audience even realizing it is happening to them. The language is coded to seem innocent for plausible deniability and it isn’t even possible for the target to understand what has happened to them. When extremists use these dog whistles, you need someone outside of the intended audience to recognize it, label it, and call it out. It is no surprise that people on the left don’t understand these dog whistles that were being used. That is the really dangerous thing about these dog whistles in that you cannot even know they are being used on you. But outsiders do understand exactly what is happening here.
Can you please state the exact wording that is a “dog whistle”? And would you concede that the right uses dog whistles as well?
I can show it to you, but as experts on extremism have noted, dog whistles are coded for plausible deniability. So you won’t even realize that the language is a dog whistle fanning the flames of your unconscious prejudice. So, don’t be bothered if you don’t see it. What Kimmel was signaling to violent fascists was that even if you murder a high profile political opponent in cold blood to silence him, the media will run cover for the cause and blame it on “the other side.” Othering is very important in the coding of dog whistles. Yes, experts first identified the use of dog whistles on the right.
Speaking of dog whistles… this is just a small selection of Trump‘s dog whistles meant to incite hostility toward the left: “Enemy of the People” – Used to delegitimize the media and critics. “Radical Left” / “Far-Left Lunatics” – Dehumanizes or demonizes political opponents. “Take Our Country Back” – Implies the country is under illegitimate control. “Second Amendment People” – Interpreted by some as a veiled threat toward opponents of gun rights. “Lock Them Up” – Encourages criminalizing political rivals. “Rigged Election” / “Stop the Steal” – Undermines democratic outcomes and incites distrust. “When the looting starts, the shooting starts” – Seen as condoning violence during protests. “Thugs” – Used to describe protesters, often with racial undertones. “Patriots” (referring to Jan. 6 rioters) – Frames violent actors as heroes. “We fight like hell” – Preceded the Capitol riot and seen as a call to action. Trump usually doesn’t let a day go by without making a comment against “ radical left-wing lunatics.”
