***For the love of god, don’t read this is if you’re pregnant or have birth trauma*** To be clear I am aware that unfortunate accidents like this have always happened, especially with fetal death, but with doctors fleeing red states and with the lack of legal abortion in so many states now, this is going to start happening more. If my understanding is correct, technically shoulder dystocia can happen to any birthing woman, but it’s more likely if the fetus is too big (which can be a consequence of gestational diabetes, which pregnant women need to be screened and have appropriate treatment for and that’s not going to happen if there isn’t enough prenatal care) or if the pelvic opening is too small (which can be positional or because someone is too young to give birth safely). https://apnews.com/article/decapitated-baby-delivery-lawsuit-georgia-hospital-doctor-ffcb2e9e7745ffc6f429ad9000a77519 But hey, LiFe, right? What’s a few more women per year maybe getting to hold their deceased newborn that some poor obstetric nurse has just had to suture the head back on? That’s no big deal according to forced birthers.
Horrific. What in the world happened here???
This is a horrific story, but the doctor who allegedly performed this botched delivery was an experienced provider with more than ten years in practice— this wasn’t specifically the work of the forced birthers. On the other hand, this is a spot on example of why we have such grim maternal mortality statistics. The couple says they asked for a cesarean. Inevitably that would have saved the child’s life— but it could as easily be the mothers life. Women just aren’t seen as having a say in their own care by a large proportion of the medical community.
I’m the pp who posted that story and correct, this is not the direct fault of the forced birthers, but it does become a bigger risk as fewer providers practice in forced birther states and as more women (and girls) have children they didn’t want and potentially couldn’t access prenatal care for. In this situation the charge is that the doctor made a pretty big error, I think in performing the Zavanelli maneuver or something similar, as part of the treatment of shoulder dystocia. Shoulder dystocia is when the head has emerged by the shoulder bone gets stuck behind the pubic bone. (Chatter online suggests the biggest mistake committed by the doctor was in trying to cover this up, thus violating the family’s trust) Intrauterine fetal demise can also cause a fetus to begin to decompose and fetal heads can become decapitated for this reason. But there’s no suggestion that this was a stillbirth, just that it can happen sometimes. The world of pregnancy, labor and delivery can be incredibly gruesome* and forced birthers are going to force millions of women to take massive bodily and emotional risks. Many of us have undertaken these risks willingly, but therein lies the difference. We chose to. *my love and prayers to the memory of Anarcha Westcott, Betsy and Lucy and the other women who were operated upon without their consent and without anesthesia. If you know who I’m talking about, you know who I’m talking about.
