I wonder if this Birdwatcher would’ve also approached a burly black man with a pitbull in the park , and record that guy I highly doubt it he saw a target and he took it , he saw an opportunity and he took it . And now we Have this viral Social media storm which does nothing except invite us divide a fractured country during a pandemic we are being destroyed in every single way and a stupid little incident in a park is what we are focused on
It's interesting that you're focusing on what the man would've done in another situation. What about what the woman would've done if a white man or woman approached her. Do you think she still would've called the police?
I think if a man of any race threatened to lure her dog away she would have reacted similarly. her reaction may have been more fearful due to race, though. I also think it’s a good point that he wouldn’t have done that to any man (of any race). it’s not one-dimensional here.
Well since we’re making wild ass guesses about what she would have done had a white man requested she leash her dog, I think she would have put him on a leash, as requested, and walked away. Which is what she should have done when a black man requested she obey the law.
You know how you stop your dog from being lured away... you leash them.
the point is - she was scared in response to what she percieved as a threat to her dog. it’s right there in his facebook post. her reaction was also threatening. it was an escalation that he started — which does not make her right, but also does not support the twitter narrative that she was faking it.
NP. Yes, she was so scared that she came right up to him. Did you see the video? Those are not the actions of someone who is scared. If you think a person is threatening you or your dog, you don't walk right up to them and engage them further. You get the hell away from them.
He politely asked her to leash her dog. She told him off. That was the escalation. If she didn't want to escalate, she could have taken her dog and left. She could have refused to argue with with. She chose to respond to his polite request with belligerence and refusal to follow the rules. The supposed "threat" to her dog was made after she escalated. Here is what the victim reports happened before he started recording:
On Facebook, Christian Cooper wrote, “Central Park this morning: This woman’s dog is tearing through the plantings in the Ramble.” He described the conversation he says occurred before he began recording with his cell phone: ME: Ma’am, dogs in the Ramble have to be on the leash at all times. The sign is right there. HER: The dog runs are closed. He needs his exercise. ME: All you have to do is take him to the other side of the drive, outside the Ramble, and you can let him run off leash all you want. HER: It’s too dangerous. ME: Look, if you’re going to do what you want, I’m going to do what I want, but you’re not going to like it. HER: What’s that? ME (to the dog): Come here, puppy! HER: He won’t come to you. ME: We’ll see about that…
The bolded is the escalation. She could have leashed her dog. She could have left the area. She could have ignored the man. All of which would be deescalating. She chose to retort to the man and refuse to comply with the law. That's the escalation. Stop trying to blame the victim and protect the bigot here.
