Why did he research that trail the day before and not take the posts on All Trails re: the heat in Devil's Gulch canyon into consideration? Particularly since many were from spring hikes? Why did he not post on the Mariposa Trails FB group he was a member of and ask about hiking HC/SL loop that weekend? Or ask suggestions as to where to hike with the heat warning and air quality advisory? He must not have been all that concerned about the warnings, perhaps a tragic error. After the deaths, locals on that FB group said they would not/did not hike that trail in August, supported by the fact that no one came upon them for days. He did not ask because he thought he had all the knowledge and experience he needed, from the app, yet his judgment re: the situation was flawed. Regardless of anything she may or may not have done, he planned ahead of time to be on that trail, in those conditions, with the dog and baby. Seems a tragic miscalculation, Kreycik was trying to fit in a run before he met his family, not kill himself. People make mistakes and sometimes the consequences are huge esp when heat is involved and help is inaccessible. Gerrish picked that trail, read up on it the day before and despite the heat warning, reviews re: heat in the canyon and weather forecast, he put the baby in a backpack on his back and hiked down the trail. With the algae caution not the best time for the dog or baby to swim to cool off, they had a lovely pool at home, alas. And what goes down into a deep canyon has to come up the steep trail and all trails out were steep. No one dropped them from an alien ship or held a gun to their heads and marched them down the trail. His wife was not the one reading up on the trail the day before, he was. Mistakes were made and the outcome is very sad. Regardless of any other findings, he knowingly and with intent hiked with the baby on his back down into Devil's Gulch, when it had been 105 the day before. Are you the poster who claimed Ellen slept all day, with no basis? Absent a finding from LE that may not even be possible given how long the bodies were on the trail, it seems to be a family outing gone wrong.
