There is an overall decrease in church membership. You may have to zoom out of the Bible Belt to get the full picture. Organized Christianity is dying. In 2020, 47% of Americans were identified as being members of a church. A good chunk of that 47% is as corrupt as homemade sin—clutching to their Trump autographed Bibles. The whole American version of Christianity has been reconstructed around politics, and not the other way around. It’s disingenuous to have a deconstruction conversation without recognizing that the church has shifted, seismically so, to be Christian nationalist. I don’t look to Jen for spiritual guidance, but I appreciate her voice in the conversation. Many people are leaving the faith altogether. Statically, many of us reading this will have children who become atheists. The American version of Christianity is not sustainable. Not because, “many are called and few are chosen,” but because we’ve used the Lord’s name in vain by politicizing all that is holy. Faith and politics aren’t unrelated, but faith that shifts for political gain is not the church’s best witness. What is viewed as conservative today, was at some point liberal. The Lutheran church, for example, 1st ordained women in 1970. So much of what’s being said about Jen, Sarah, Nadia, and Beth was being said about the liberal Lutheran’s back then. Fun fact from this old lady, I was raised to believe that Lutherans were going to hell because the woman led prayers and the acceptance of drinking alcohol. Times change. Jesus doesn’t. That takes a lot more reckoning than some of you are willing to face.
