Unlike most people here my daughter is on a competing ECNL team but I'm not salty that Bethesda and Arlington are so good. Surprising that they're out because both of those teams were very impressive when we last played them. I figured one would make it to the finals. Great season and good luck next spring. We might have been happy to be there but outside of the SoCal blues game we hung in the other games, played more technical but couldn't score. Hit the post a few times, it is what it is, but a good experience nonetheless. ~MDU parent
You don't realize how much better soccer exists in SoCal, Dallas, etc. Teams that look "very impressive" here in the mid atlantic are routinely humbled this time of year. It happens over and over
I didn't watch the games so I can't comment if they got humbled, but I think it's fair to say Bethesda and Arlington would be considered top 25 teams in the country based on their results, at least in the 2011 group. That's pretty damn good IMO. SoCal Blues players were all very strong, fast/high motor types. Bethesda is more technical and disciplined. Not saying they would beat SoCal but from a soccer purist perspective, Bethesda plays a better style of soccer. Not taking anything away from SoCal blues they're definitely top notch.
Preferred style is just that, a preference. Winning requires putting the ball in the back of the net. Passing around the back without a purpose doesn't count as it doesn't advance the team forward. Yeah you may connect 12 passes on a sequence and lose it in the attacking third just to be countered by a team that just has flat out better athletes. Athleticism reigns supreme on the girls side for much longer than it does the boys.
