Merkel also instituted a policy to place these 1.4 million refugees in small towns across Germany, so as to avoid creating the types of large inner city ghettos that had colored previous waves of German postwar immigration from Turkey.  Unfortunately, however, it simply triggered the fear of Germans everywhere, particularly when paired with the high profile crimes these immigrants were committing in the cities.

Bottom Line: this liberal policy to condone an unchecked wave of immigration has truly set off an equal and opposite reaction.  Yes, European conservatism and populism was already growing slowly, but Merkel basically supercharged that growth.  Now we are seeing the consequences.
