Can all of Gay's defenders explain why they are so defensive of her? It's a bit puzzling given the revelation that her entire academic history is riddled with plagiarism. What is your point in defending her? Is it because she's "Strong Black Woman" and you must always defend Strong Black Woman even if they turn out to be mediocre and corrupt?
I’m confused by this too. I’ve been an active supporter of organizations that bring diversity to workplaces (for instance Black Girls Code, great organization). But it’s also quite clear that Gay was protected and elevated for reasons that had nothing to do with her paltry academic record. The plagiarism allegations against her — and they are remarkable — were not new. The plagiarism is documented and extensive. You can see it on its face. I’m genuinely confused by the people who seem to think Gay should keep her position. In academia plagiarism and data falsification, when proven, has traditionally been a career killer. And that’s true of men and women of all races. So why defend this so vociferously? It just makes the left look entirely weak and makes diversity efforts look really bad. This is a case of diversity going wrong, it is okay to admit that Gay was unsuitable for the position based on her plagiarism. I don’t even particularly care about the ham-handed way she handled the Congressional testimony. It was not well-done, but she could have survived it. However, the point is that she never should have been in that position in the first place because the plagiarism and thin academic record should have disqualified her ages ago. But it didn’t. Why defend that so much? It just makes you look foolish to people who aren’t extremists.
