I suspect  that Mr. Jones (the shooter) thought that people were harrassing him... and told his family that.  But, in reality, it was probably the voices in his head that were "harassing" him.  The witnesses said no one was bothering him and he said something like "they won't leave me alone."  He may have been untethered from reality and the people on the bus were unfortunately in the way.  And it would make sense that a person who *thinks* people are out to get him would get a gun.  That's where family-members, teachers, classmates, and roommates need to be alert to changes in mental status.  Maybe that's why someone DID report Jones' comment about a having a gun.

Wash Post article reported the football players Jones shot did not know him or have previous contact with him.  https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2022/11/15/uva-shooting-witness-reveals-details/.  As the PP said, it seems like the paranoia could be emerging schizophrenia.  He may have been imagining people were picking on him when they talked amongst themselves and were laughing, not at him but at what was being said.  I think the public defender will likely order a psychiatric evaluation.  [/quote]
