The humanity of this girl, to make sure the families know their loved ones were not alone in their last moments. Unbearably sad, but also such a gift, because as a mom I know that would matter to me.


I completely agree. It would bring me such comfort if my sons were one of those killed or injured. Reading her account and about her actions has had me in tears. Her family must be so proud of the daughter they have raised and the woman she is. Brava! She lends a moment of light to a horrible, terrible tragedy.

You seem to believe that if we do things "right" or "punish" people to the fullest extent for minor transgressions that it will prevent violence, but nothing could be further from the truth. People are not all bad, or all good. There is a vast continuum of behavior, so we can only occasionally predict outcome. I believe the more punitive we are, people lose hope. Before you jump on me about not charging people, I'm talking about reforming the criminal justice system to be rehabilitative.

Also, remember that everyone with a gun is a good guy, until they aren't. Do you want to take past accolades away from police officers and military who have shot their families?

MAYBE because he had risen above and was doing well? You seem to just think he's an awful, evil human being who deserved no lenience and no recognition for doing things right. Some people are able to rise from the ashes of a tough childhood and make something on himself. Clearly he unfortunately had some type of psychotic break or something that has led him down this path. Doesn't mean he wasn't a good kid, worthy of being student of the year 5 years ago.


He was a member of the National Honor Society. What are you talking about?

I suspect that Mr. Jones (the shooter) thought that people were harrassing him... and told his family that. But, in reality, it was probably the voices in his head that were "harassing" him. The witnesses said no one was bothering him and he said something like "they won't leave me alone." He may have been untethered from reality and the people on the bus were unfortunately in the way. And it would make sense that a person who *thinks* people are out to get him would get a gun. That's where family-members, teachers, classmates, and roommates need to be alert to changes in mental status. Maybe that's why someone DID report Jones' comment about a having a gun.

Very very sad that these three victims had their lives snuffed out for NOTHING.


Wash Post article reported the football players Jones shot did not know him or have previous contact with him. https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2022/11/15/uva-shooting-witness-reveals-details/. As the PP said, it seems like the paranoia could be emerging schizophrenia. He may have been imagining people were picking on him when they talked amongst themselves and were laughing, not at him but at what was being said. I think the public defender will likely order a psychiatric evaluation.

What the hell are you talking about? Why should someone who helped him pursue his education feel bad? You do realize that this young man could have in fact been a good, high achieving student who showed true promise? I understand the desire to "other" people who do horrific things, but the reality may well be that he was deserving of his student of the year award when he got it. And sadly, his life took a turn for the worse due to mental illness and access to guns. Are you really saying that we should give up on kids who get into trouble for any reason and never give them opportunities? Just stop.

UVA's endowment is $14.5 billion.

Good, because one of the students who died was an NFL prospect.
