I work with children who are homeless, are victims of abuse, are in foster care, or are trapped in the middle of family immigration battles. None of those parents selected “in person” learning for their children because they know that things can always get worse. Potentially exposing your family to a viral plague is going to have much more dire consequences for a family without health insurance, a large comfortable home where multiple people can quarantine at once, and who cannot survive without the consistent income of both adults and teenagers. It is insane (and frankly classist and racist) to pretend you are advocating for these people even though we have data indicating they are not on your side. If you never engage with any of these communities and now you are using them as an argument for opening schools during the pandemic, you are a bad person.
Recap of the conversation: The pro-DL PP above was saying that all kids would be "fine" because other places go through war and famine and those kids are "fine," which is wildly untrue and a horrific thing to say. Other people pointed out that even war-torn communities prioritized education, and only here is education considered so immaterial that it's sidelined like this. Frankly as a family who has seen the generational impact of war up close, PPs statement that kids will be "fine" without education is infuriating. I don't even think we should go back now because of case rates, but this "let them eat cake, they'll be fine with no education for years, because my kids are 'fine'"" attitude is appalling. Education should be prioritized. The long-term impacts of this loss will be disastrous for many kids. So yes, it is infuriating to hear spoiled rich suburban moms talk about how kids will be "fine" with the loss of education because other kids have survived war when they clearly know nothing about either war or the value of education. Also, if you are pretended you are speaking for all disadvantaged communities, you are a bad person yourself.
