If it's held up over the years, why NOT keep using it? How often do I have to buy new sheets to not be "cheap and disgusting"? It's called being a reasonable consumer. And it's a reason to *NOT* buy Buzz Lightyear or dinosaur sheets. Just buy regular sheets that might grow with your kid. They should not be disgusting if you do your laundry regularly.
