My go-to:

1 set white onesies per size
1 set white socks per size (with size in rubber grippers on the bottoms of the feet)
2 pairs footie pjs per size (gender neutral)

3 pairs of gender neutral pants/shorts and 5 shirts per size, solids for bottoms and coordinating patterns for shirts (9 mons, 12 mons, 18 mons; other people usually give 0-6 mons outfits)

2 sets baby washcloths, 1 hooded towel, all in white.
2 baby bathtub puppets (useful for washing as baby gets older, no chance of mold growing inside)

2 board books (Goodnight Moon and My World)

1 stuffed animal (high quality so that seams don't break, able to be washed and dried)

If it's the second or subsequent child, I switch to different board books, leave out the bathtub puppets and switch colors for the washcloths/towels.  I have a bag prepared anytime that I know a baby is coming, and give it whether there is a shower or not.  Because everything is gender neutral, it doesn't matter if the doctor made a mistake while predicting the child's gender, and anything that survives the child can be passed down to any other child.[/quote]
