Subject: what was the best present your baby received?
I loved getting blankets, we did get a bunch, but only one had her name on it. They are stashed all over the house, in the car, etc. We don't have 22 though, I will say that...
I also loved the stool with her name in puzzle pieces. We only got one I love it.
I also LOVE the Uncle Goose blocks someone else suggested. My DD got them when she turned 1 and those are a forever toy for sure.
You can never go wrong with footie pjs in bigger sizes. I had a lot of experienced moms bring me a set of footie pjs is 6 month size while I was on my leave. It was perfect. I was stocked well for 0-3 months, but had none for 6 month size. I would have loved 9 month and 12 month pjs too bc my kid grew like a WEED and was in 12 month clothing at 6 months.

+10 no blankets!
Practical stuff were much better gifts.
- Nail Frida -- super soft nail clippers for that agonizing first time cutting nails
- nose frida - stuffy noses
- life hack type stuff for late night feedings
- little Einstein song thing that plays continuously when kid is flipping out and she desperately needs to shower/eat/pee and screechy songs and flashing lights are the only thing that distract DC
-infant chair --see need to pee or eat!!!
-prepared meals cause the first few weeks alone on maternity leave I couldn't get my Sh-t together to make cereal let alone cook...

I'm also an advocate of baby box which comes as a gift box/sleeping bassinet all in one.

Onesies have the shoulder flaps so that you can pull it down in the event of an explosion. That's what they are there!

Definitely buy something big off the registry and then supplement with a few small things. Things that were either well loved by baby or really useful:
- Mortimer the Moose or Freddie the Firefly
- Stroller/carseat toys (Sassy brand makes some cute bug ones that my 3 year old STILL plays with in the car).
- Jellycat stuffed animal (again, 3 year old still plays with these)
- Baby socks (trumpette are expensive but the cutest!)
- Baby pants in neutral colors (everyone gives onesies, no one ever gives pants to go with those onesies, DH had to run out and buy pants that first week!)
- Zutano fleece booties in whatever size the baby will be in that winter

Books (especially if they are important to you in some way) make nice gifts, since they don't always get handed down or are destroyed when they do. They are useful over a long period, and they don't take up too much space. Worst case scenario, they are easy to donate.
I didn't get many blankets, and we used all of the ones we got...so I don't share the PPs hatred of them.

No ideas for you, OP. I do practical gifts only.
My go-to:
1 set white onesies per size
1 set white socks per size (with size in rubber grippers on the bottoms of the feet)
2 pairs footie pjs per size (gender neutral)
Sizes are 3 mons, 6 mons, 9 mons, 12 mons, 18 mons.
3 pairs of gender neutral pants/shorts and 5 shirts per size, solids for bottoms and coordinating patterns for shirts (9 mons, 12 mons, 18 mons; other people usually give 0-6 mons outfits)
2 sets baby washcloths, 1 hooded towel, all in white.
2 baby bathtub puppets (useful for washing as baby gets older, no chance of mold growing inside)
2 board books (Goodnight Moon and My World)
1 stuffed animal (high quality so that seams don't break, able to be washed and dried)
If it's the second or subsequent child, I switch to different board books, leave out the bathtub puppets and switch colors for the washcloths/towels. I have a bag prepared anytime that I know a baby is coming, and give it whether there is a shower or not. Because everything is gender neutral, it doesn't matter if the doctor made a mistake while predicting the child's gender, and anything that survives the child can be passed down to any other child.

I liked a gift basket ofa variety of different brands of soaps and diaper creams. I it was a great way to try them all and find what I liked. Plus, what might work well for a newborn might suddenly cause irritation for a 3 month old, so it was good to always have other options on hand.

I suggest if your person has a registry, the best idea is to get her something from it--so many people ignore them.
+1. Seriously just buy something from the registry. It's stuff she picked out and wants.
