Or Silver Spring. http://gis.mcpsmd.org/ServiceAreaMaps/TakomaParkMS.pdf "Approximately 20-25 seats" are reserved? So out of the approximately 180 (at Piney Branch) + 70 (at East Silver Spring) students per grade, 8-10% go to the TPMS magnet program? (And presumably an ever higher percentage get accepted, because presumably some students are accepted but don't go. Not to mention the question of whether all TPMS-zoned students get accepted separately, or whether some get accepted in general admissions and then the rest in TPMS-zoned admissions.) Is that what you're saying?
Of course you are correct to include the kids from ESS. I have no idea how they get to their number. I suspect there's not a mandate that they MUST fill 120 seats, but rather they have the flexibility to do so to accommodate qualified in-boundary kids. In other words, I doubt it's a situation where they keep two separate pools. But honestly, I don't really know how it's done. Those are questions better directed to the magnet coordinator.
Of course it's not just kids in these schools. It's the in-boundary kids who go to the Oakview/Pine Crest HGCs. In fact, that's probably where most of the kids come from. Also, there are surely a few in privates. So it's wrong to assume it's just PBES and ESS kids.
The Oakview/Pine Crest HGC serves the Blair, Einstein, Kennedy, and Northwood Clusters. What percentage of students at the Oakview/Pine Crest HGC are from East Silver Spring ES and Piney Branch ES?
I don't know the statistics, but TPES has the "gifted magnet" ES on this side of the county, so about 10-15 OOB kids get into that program and have automatic rollover into PBES. This means PBES probably feeds more kids into the HGC than average. What I don't know is what happens to the "gifted magnet" kids who finish at PBES. Do they have feeder rights to TPMS or do they go back to their home MS? Oh, and I'm the PP who is IB for TPMS but doesn't really care much about the set-aside because my own personal kids would be a terrible fit for the STEM magnet. They would be a much better fit for an arts magnet if there were a MS portfolio/test-based magnet program. So, my own preference would be for each of the magnet MS programs to have some sort of set-aside, but also for each of the MSs to have something special.
