Not OP, but when I ask someone where they work or what they do, it's not remotely about trying to determine their income. It's because I'm interested in who they are. I LOVE the work I do, and it's a big part of who I am. Even if someone else doesn't feel the same about their own work, it's how they spend a huge chunk of their time.
