Went to ILs Thanksgiving across the country. Very depressing with all these much older relatives who have obviously forgotten what it's like to have kids. They kept making comments about the children as if they weren't there and call them noisy and ill-mannered. DCs were bored, their cousins are much, much older than them and didn't want anything to do with preschoolers. I haven't told this to DH but next year I am not going and will try hard to keep DCs home. At least here they have friends and someone to play with. Over there it's like visiting a nursing home.
I think we all probably have some stories. But in all fairness to the eldsters, they are used to quiet, orderly homes and usually they have pretty cemented/rigid routines established. And when children come into those homes - it's nerve wracking for them. Even good little kids screech when excited, fuss when tired, complain, make little messes, scare the cat...etc. I'm sure you did fine and I'm sure your kids were really well behaved. Don't take it personally. Next time, take the kids outside to play for a while or into a room away from the adults to play.
