The key is that most women have an idea in their head of what makes a guy suitable for a long-term thing.  If you don't fit that idea in some way but you are cool to hang out with and treat them well, they will often be your FWB.  My last FWB was someone who "doesn't do" relationships and never wants kids or stepkids - both of those things make him incompatible with me - but he's a cool guy so we had a good FWB thing going for awhile.
