This was revealed at a time when they were warring. God warned them to be careful at that time and not trust people who were trying hard to extinguish Islam. If, however, a Jew or Christian allows Muslims to practice freely, then Muslims can befriend them. I am Muslim, but one of my good childhood friends was an orthodox Jew.
