tans
I don't think tans are meant to impress anyone. Back in the day people were ashamed to be tanned because it meant you were working outdoors. Many people avoided getting tan because it was declasse. I frankly, cannot avoid it. If I stand outside with 50 sunscreen for one soccer game with my son I get a tan. I like to go to the beach, and despite my best efforts (hat, sunscreen, umbrella) I get tan. Should I stop going? I don't think so, but this is NOT done intentionally to impress anyone, trust me.
Tans used to be a marker of lower class, because it meant you were working outdoors. Then, tans became a sign that you had the leisure to lay on the beach or golf all day or whatever, while office-worker drones were pasty white, so then tans were a status symbol. Now I think tans are less of a status symbol than they used to be, one way or the other.
