Look at apartments and townhomes in the Pentagon City and Ballston areas --those give you Metro access, good schools, kid-friendly neighborhoods, access to shopping, rec facilities reasonably close. Of course, it's a 30-min commute to the Hill. Also, will need to increase your budget to $2,000 or so.

We walk 20 minutes to Ballston and we rent a 3bd/2ba house for $3k. We were shown some 3bd townhouses in the $2500 range within a few minutes walk to East Falls Church metro.  You might be able to find a 2bd townhouse or apartment a short drive to the West FC / Vienna metros for $2k.  I think extra bedrooms might be easier to find than &gt;1 bathroom. We wanted 2 1/2 bath and could not find that on our $3k budget and still walk to the Orange line. [/quote]
