My husband is in a doctoral program and his Dad has checked his "homework." His father is a recently retired professor and has spent years writing and editing scholarly work. Why the hell wouldn't my husband use that resource? Because he's related to him? Ridic. Of course he asks his father to edit and review.
Uh...as long as the "editing" doesn't change the content (ideas) of the paper and as long as the paper is in the scholar's own words, not the words of their proofreader. Sometimes there can be a fine line between editing and rewriting.. Ex: I check my son's papers for spelling, punctuation, clarity. If something is awkwardly worded, I'll circle it and tell him to reword it. If his ideas aren't well formulated, I'll let him know that he needs to put more thought (or research) into what he is writing. I do not write his papers for him. I do not agree with everything he writes.
